999 nuisance caller handed suspended prison sentence

58-year-old made 11 calls in one evening

A Douglas man has been warned he has ‘serious issues’ which need addressing after repeatedly making annoying or nuisance calls to the emergency services.

Christopher Mcevoy, of James Street, abused the 999 line on two occasions in just over a month.

The 58-year-old made 11 calls to the Emergency Services Joint Control Room, on 16 August – when police attended his property they found him safe and well.

On 18 September Mcevoy made six 999 calls requesting help – when officers attended his home he told them he was ‘overwhelmed’ saying: “I just wanted help.”

He later admitted wasting police time and making annoying or persistent use of the public communications network.

He also entered guilty pleas to being drunk and incapable and attempting to breach a licensing order.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse Mcevoy’s advocate said her client had long term difficulties with alcohol which he used to ‘regulate his mood’.

Conceding that it led to ‘foolish offences’ she told the court the hearing marked a ‘crucial turning point’ for him adding: “He has a newfound want to address his offending behaviour.”

Magistrates sentenced Mcevoy to four months in custody suspended for 12 months and placed him under a year long supervision order; he must also pay prosecution costs of £300.

Addressing the nuisance calls they told him: “They are potentially putting other people’s lives at danger.”
