Airmail to be replaced by ferry service

Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) says it's currently in the 'final stages' of refining arrangements and details will be published 'in the coming weeks'

The Isle of Man's Airmail service is set to be replaced by a ferry service.

Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) says it's currently in the 'final stages' of refining arrangements and details will be published 'in the coming weeks'.

It comes after Royal Mail made changes to its UK postal system on 6 August meaning it was no longer required to deliver next day mail to the Island and intended to cease operations of their mail aircraft in favour of extending road and freight services.

IOMPO Chief Executive, Simon Kneen, says research shows the 'vast majority' of customers wouldn't be affected by the change from air to sea delivery, adding the shift is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by over 600 tonnes each year.

Furthermore, the organisation adds it will introduce a 'Tracked 48' product and start a trial to maintain a UK guaranteed next day service for business account customers.

That will be managed through a scheduled airline when Royal Mail stops its aircraft operation in mid-October.

The service will also be available as an option for other people to use for personal mail at Postal Headquarters in Braddan.

All other mail will be delivered via ferry and road routes.

IOMPO also states there will be a minimum four weeks notice before any changes come into effect.
