Ben-my-Chree celebrates 20 years' service

Brought to the Island by Captain Vernon Kinley

Today, the fifth of July 2018, is a very special day on the Isle of Man for obvious reasons.

However it's also a significant date for the lady of our heart...

Twenty years ago today, the Ben-my-Chree entered service - on 5 July 1998.

She was ordered in 1997 by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, and brought to the Island, from her birthplace in the Netherlands, by the late Captain Vernon Kinley.

The £24 million vessel was criticised for carrying too few passengers, having no open deck, and can also perform poorly in high sea states.

But 20 years on, she still makes sure that there is, indeed... a boat in the morning.
