Braddan woman died from heroin overdose

Verdict of drug dependence recorded at Douglas Courthouse

An inquest has heard a Braddan woman died after a heroin overdose due to drug dependence.

Forty-six-year-old Cheryl Eves was discovered at a property in Strang Close, Union Mills in April last year.

The court heard police investigating a series of burglaries recovered a number of reported stolen items from the house.

Coroner of Inquests John Needham heard Mrs Eves was found in her bedroom on April 24th 2014, the day after she had died.

A used syringe was in the room and the post mortem examination found she had a number of needle marks on her body.

Mrs Eves had been involved with a drugs and alcohol rehabilitation team on and off since 2008 having addiction problems since her early teens.

The toxicology report found she had double the typically fatal levels of codeine in her system, a high amount of morphine and a number of other substances.

It was noted heroin users build up a tolerance to the drug and can increase the dosage.

This however fades very quickly, even in a matter of days, meaning relapsing can prove fatal if administering the same levels as before.

Mr Needham said there was no indication it was suicide and recorded a verdict of dependence on drugs.

He also suggested Mrs Eves had the stolen items in her home to fund her drug habit.

Closing the inquest Mr Needham said this case showed how dangerous heroin really is and the grave consequences for those involved.
