Swingbridge to close for refurbishment

Vital work on Castletown river crossing planned

The Cain swingbridge in Castletown is to be closed for refurbishment after 'decades' of exposure to the elements.

On October 4, the Department of Infrastructure will remove the bridge, which sits across the town's harbour, for essential maintenance work.

It will then be moved to a covered workshop for replacement and repair work on the main slewing ring, rollers and corroded areas of the structure.

The department is warning there may be restricted access to Quayside properties as the bridge is taken off.

It's named after Manxman Major Robert Cain, who was awarded the Victoria cross for his bravery during the Battle of Arnhem in 1944.
