Call for debate on 'crucial' pensions issue

Station on stand-by to air debate

An MHK will attempt to hold a debate in the House of Keys today (3 May) over an issue he says is of paramount importance to all Manx residents - the growing cost of public sector pensions.

East Douglas member Chris Robertshaw wants ministers to explain how the gap between member contributions and the cost of paying staff pensions can be bridged.

A set of reforms due to be debated in Tynwald last month was withdrawn at the last minute.

Mr Robertshaw says without a solution, the impact on taxpayers and Island public services could be serious.

The government's financial strategy assumes increased income from economic growth will meet the pensions bill.

But Mr Robertshaw says the strategy is short on detail:

The House of Keys will be asked to allow Manx Radio to broadcast the debate this morning.

A motion from East Douglas MHK Chris Thomas calls for the unusual step.

The station broadcasts the entire proceedings of Tynwald each month, but only Question Time in the Keys.

If MHKs agree to the debate being aired, you can hear it on Manx Radio's AM 1368 service, at a time to be advised.
