Calls for Manx Government to do more to tackle climate change

Biosphere status should be taken more seriously says IOMFOE

The Isle of Man Government are facing calls to intensify their efforts against climate change after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have stated leaders have a moral obligation to do so.

The IPCC insists extreme weather will worsen if global temperature isn't restricted within 12 years.

In the wake of the stark warning, a letter from Isle of Man Friends of Earth has been published.

Biosphere awards are were handed out to various organisations and businesses last week.

However, Isle of Man Friends of the Earth show concerns over Government potentially preferring the title of having a Biosphere status more than the responsibilities that come with it.

UNESCO objectives state that 'Biosphere Reserves are an effective instrument for mitigating climate change'.

Despite being the first entire Island nation to receive the prestigious UNESCO status, IOM Friends of the Earth have stated that Tynwald policy is to reduce our carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 yet data from 1990 show no progress has been made.

In their letter, the local company go on to say that having a Biosphere status is 'more than an exercise in self congratulation'. It is a commitment to change direction.

Something that needs to be addressed not only environmentally but also in Government's understanding of what the accreditation is meant to represent.
