Charity which aims to make people better drivers to close

Isle of Man Advanced Motorists and Motorcyclists group says decision 'not made lightly'

The Isle of Man branch of a charity which aims to make people better drivers and riders looks set to close.

Manx Radio understands the Isle of Man Advanced Motorists and Motorcyclists group will stop operating by the end of the month.

The decision was made at an extraordinary general meeting which was held at the end of July with members who attended voting for closure ‘following discussion of options’.

According to an email sent to members of the Manx IAM, which Manx Radio has seen, the decision was due to the group not being able to ‘resolve a new committee’ after the board stepped down.

Closure has been described as ‘the only viable option going forward’ and a decision that has not been made ‘lightly’.

Any members currently under observation, awaiting tests or otherwise, will be able to complete their current courses and take the advanced driving test as planned.

All money held in accounts operated by the charity will be passed to the Attorney General’s Chambers and will remain on the Island.

IAM RoadSmart is the UK’s largest independent road safety charity and was formed in 1956 – it aims to make roads safer by improving driver and rider skills through coaching and education.

It’s described local groups who champion the cause as its ‘lifeblood’.

Manx Radio has invited the Isle of Man Advanced Motorists and Motorcyclists group to comment – the request has been declined.
