Chief minister addresses population targets as conference gets underway

Two-day event gets underway at Comis Hotel

The chief minister says his administration has overseen the creation of 1300 new jobs and the approval of 800 new homes since 2021, in his opening remarks at the Government Conference today (17 September).

Alfred Cannan has been addressing attendees at the Comis Hotel as the two-day event gets underway.

He also said his government had overseen £90million in private investment for major infrastructure projects and had invested £18.3million in reducing hospital waiting times.

Treasury Minister Alex Allinson is expected to give an announcement on the health service's overspend tomorrow morning (18 September).

Earlier this month it was revealed that Manx Care is expecting to exceed its budget by £16.8million.

"I think government probably did not get its message right, it was always about growing the working population." - Chief Minister Alfred Cannan

Mr Cannan also addressed those targets to boost the Island's population to 100,000 by 2037:

Airport Director Gary Cobb and Isle of Man Steam Packet Managing Director Brian Thomson are due to give presentations later this morning regarding connectivity.
