Chief Minister summons new MLCs

Upset in upper chamber over move

Manx Radio understands Chief Minister Howard Quayle summoned all five recently elected Members of the Legislative Council to his office earlier this week.

The message delivered to them was essentially to "not rock the boat" and "not to cause trouble".

In a House of Keys election in March, Jane Poole-Wilson, Kate Lord-Brennan, Tanya August-Hanson and Marlene Hendy were elected to the upper chamber for a five year term with Kerry Sharpe serving for the next two years.

The Chief Minister has told Manx Radio that, following complaints he had received from MHKs, the meeting was to discuss the differences between the branches of parliament and government and, in particular, the role of Legislative Council, which is primarily one of scrutiny.
