Claims more parents are choosing to pull their children out of traditional schools

FOI figures reveal more than five times as many children being educated at home since 2018

A mum who home educates her children believes more parents are choosing to pull their children out of traditional schools on the Island.

It's after figures from a recent Freedom of Information request by Manx Radio revealed the number of children being home educated here is five times higher than in 2018.

Then, 47 were being taught at home, but as of September 2025 that number had risen to 244.

Amy Griffiths has been trying to find out why:

Manx Radio has approached the Department of Education, Sport and Culture for a response to some of the issues raised.

In a statement, it says:

"The Department of Education, Sport and Culture recognises that families make choices based on the individual needs of their children and their family, and home education remains a valid alternative.

"The Department believes that attending school offers many benefits beyond academic learning, including access to specialist teaching, pastoral support and opportunities to develop friendships with other pupils.

"Schools in the Isle of Man work hard to support all children, whatever their needs and continually develop inclusive and nurturing environments which enables everyone to achieve."
