Closure of cemeteries was ‘unavoidable’

Leader of Douglas Borough Council gives reasoning for closures

The decision to close the borough and lawn cemeteries was unavoidable, according to the leader of Douglas Borough Council.

Councillor David Christian has made an announcement following the closures, saying they comply with government's directives during the coronavirus pandemic.

The measures require the Council to close its two cemeteries to the general public, with such spaces only being permitted to be open for funerals or cremations.

Councillor Christian says 'we recognise this is an emotive matter and we are not insensitive to people’s concerns, but we all have a part to play in keeping this island community – especially the vulnerable – safe and doing all we can to protect our nation’s healthcare services at this time of crisis.'

Rushen Parish has also announced that Rushen Burial Grounds and Churchyards are closed to the public.
