Coastal Erosion Working Group set up by DEFA

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has set up a Coastal Erosion Working Group.

It will look at ways of slowing the rate of erosion on the Kirk Michael coastline, particularly around the Glen Whyllin area.

The group will be chaired by Minister Phil Gawne and include Michael MHK Alf Cannan, who has campaigned for action on the matter for some time.

Speaking in the House of Keys this morning, Mr Gawne said that whilst the issue was a significant one, coastal erosion was inevitable without the investment of long millions of pounds.

But he said he could only give a draft outline of the committee's responsibilities at the moment.

The first meeting of the working group is expected to take place some time in early February. The group will also include a member of Michael Commissioners, a member of the local community and officers from the DEFA and other government departments.
