Consultation seeks views on installing 5G equipment

Government proposes telecommunications changes

The public is being asked for views on proposed changes to the planning system to allow 5G equipment to be installed on the Isle of Man.

The seven-week public consultation on the Telecommunications Development Order launched earlier this week.

The consultation document says the changes are needed to allow for the delivery of fibre optics and 5G mobile to Manx residents.

The Programme for Government states the Isle of Man must be ready for new technology, but a report published last year revealed the Island had dropped 12 places in the global league table for broadband speed.

A Government committee found it's necessary to update planning policy in order to deliver 5G, while the proposals would also make it easier to install small-scale telecommunications equipment.

The consultation hub on the government's website includes full details of the proposals, as well as an online survey to gauge the public's views.

Responses must be submitted by 2 August.
