Ben-my-Chree joins rescue of stricken boat

The importance of boats having a good VHF radio was highlighted at the end of last week, says the RNLI.

Two Manx lifeboats and one from Barrow, the Ben-my-Chree and a helicopter were called into action to search for a vessel which broadcast a Mayday distress call when it was around 10 miles east of the Island.

The crew had become disorientated through seasickness and exhaustion, though, and were unable to relay their exact position.

The Ben-my-Chree, on her morning sailing to Heysham, was also called into action, using her elevated bridge and radar to help with the search.

The boat was located, and the Ben broke from her normal route to assist the rescue operation, pulling up alongside the vessel to help shelter it from the strong winds and big waves.

She was eventually towed back to England by the Barrow lifeboat, once the crew had been checked over and an airlift of them was deemed unnecessary.
