Curragh Road works to finish for Christmas

'Challenging' project shuts down for a fortnight

Work on the Curragh Road in St John's is to cease for a fortnight over the festive period, from today.

The Department of Infrastructure says it has been a 'challenging' project so far, with the contractor having to continually pump water out of trenches and facing a lot of poor weather recently.

There have reportedly also been unforeseen issues along the way, such as unearthing a long-forgotten and uncharted culvert dating back to probably Victorian times.

That has been incorporated into the refurbishment work.

When the project finishes for Christmas, the contractor will move all valuable equipment off and secure the site.

Curragh Road will remain closed to the public.

Work is set to resume on 6 January, and barring unforeseen circumstances should be completed towards the end of February.
