Cycling road closures headache flagged

Closures 'disrupt Sunday worship' - preacher

Crowds are expected out in force to support a major cycling event which will see some of the sport's top stars compete on Manx roads tomorrow (25 June).

The Women's and Men's British National Road Race Championships are being staged around the TT course and a circuit at Abbleyands in north Douglas.

A schedule of road closures spanning a period from 7.30 am on Sunday until early evening, has long been planned and publicised by organisers.

The event's being held on Sunday to minimise disruption, with crossing points open between stages and races.

But a protest on behalf of church-goers has been sounded by Island preacher Peter Murcott - who says the closures will disrupt  Sunday worship.

In an open letter to Tynwald members, he claims the event has breached what he calls the 'sanctity of Sunday':

The leader of the Methodist Church on the Island Reverend Richard Hall has distanced himself from Mr Murcott's remarks.

He says the Methodist Church 'welcomes the visitors from around the world' - adding there has been some inconvenience caused but 'everything is in hand'.
