D-Day landings anniversary marked

Service on North Quay in Douglas

Members of the public have been attending an event on North Quay to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The event has been organised by Chairman of the Normandy Veterans’ Association, Hector Duff, BEM.

A service was led by Monsignor John Devine, OBE, Chaplain to His Worship the Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Jonathan Joughin JP, and included the Last Post and two minutes’ silence followed by Reveille.

The mayor then placed a wreath at the foot of the lectern before principal guests moved to the garden on Ridgeway Street, adjacent to the Town Hall to place wreaths on the Normandy Veterans' Memorial.

Mr Duff, who will celebrate his hundredth birthday later this year, survived the landings in 1944 as well as campaigns in Italy and North Africa.
