Decision over Peel telegraph poles "should still stand", says minister

Clare Barber faces questions over member's decision to overrule planning committee

The decision to grant permission for telegraph poles in Peel, despite a planning inspector recommending otherwise, should still stand, according to the environment minister.

Manx Telecom's plans, for eight new poles in Bellevue Park and Carmane Close and another in Cronk Rearyt, were rejected by the planning committee over their visual impact.

However, after an appeal, Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper - having been delegated responsibility - instructed the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture to reverse that decision.

The minister, Clare Barber, says an administrative error could open up the decision to legal challenge - but doesn't think it should change the outcome in this case:

Meanwhile, Mr Hooper says Tynwald is responsible for making it easier to erect telegraph poles.

He says when the North and Western Area Plans were rejected, it also did away with planning safeguards.
