DEFA reverses planning approval for new KWC pool

The plan was originally approved in 2021

A planning application to build a new sports centre, with a 50-metre pool, at King William’s College has been refused.

The plan was submitted in March 2021 and was originally approved in principle – however that decision has now been reversed.

Castletown Commissioners has shared a letter from the Department of Environment Food and Agriculture highlighting the reasons why.

The department says it has not been sufficiently demonstrated that there is an ‘overriding need’ for the development or that there is no other acceptable alternative site.

Due to its siting and scale DEFA says it would have an ‘unacceptably adverse impact on the immediate setting’ of the site and registered buildings.

Parties are being told the only way to challenge the decision is by a petition of doléance brought to the High Court of Justice within three months.
