Cllr Devon Watson believes it's 'unfair' that owners of empty homes don't pay
The leader of Douglas Council says the government's consultation into improving the rates system is an 'encouraging first step' to dealing with the 'housing crisis'.
Councillor Devon Watson says it's “unfair” that residents, including renters, must pay rates while owners of dilapidated or unused properties are exempt.
The Treasury consultation is inviting the public to give their views on a range of proposals, including removing rates exemptions for dangerous or ruinous buildings, introducing discounts, and placing a potential cap on the rateable value of quarries.
Councillor Watson believes local authorities need to be using the 'mechanisms' within the current rate system to try and improve housing on the Island.
