Douglas fireworks display cancelled due to prom work

Council says alternative locations didn't make the grade

This year's Bonfire Night fireworks display in the capital has been cancelled due to ongoing work on Douglas promenade.

The town's council says it made the decision 'despite persistent efforts' to find a different location.

Regeneration work on the promenade is not set to be completed until 31 March next year.

Councillor Stephen Pitts said he "sincerely hopes" the 2021 display will be able to go ahead as normal.

"It's not proved possible to arrive at an acceptable solution for staging the display [this year], given the Douglas promenade redevelopment work.

"The council understands this decision will be met with disappointment.

"Alternative locations were considered at length, but none proved suitable in terms of public safety and accessibility, which are paramount for an event of this size and scale, nor could they provide the level of spectacle and quality of display for which the event is well-known across the Island."
