Douglas man jailed for breaking coronavirus rules

Twenty-one-year-old spotted by police twice in one week

A Douglas man’s been sent to prison after breaking coronavirus rules twice in a week.

Twenty-one-year-old Kieran Neil Cain of Empire Terrace appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He admitted breaking the Emergency Powers Act by being out of his home without a reasonable excuse.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court on 11 April, Cain was one of a number of men warned by police officers after they were caught socialising on Douglas beach.

Just a week later on 18 April, police on patrol spotted Cain and another man walking up Crellin’s Hill in the capital less than two metres apart.

Both were stopped and unemployed Cain said he was accompanying his friend to the shop but wasn’t planning on buying anything.

Mrs Hughes said he had no excuse for socialising and breaking social distancing rules after he’d already been given a warning, saying anybody ignoring the regulations puts everyone on the Island at risk.

Cain was jailed for a month, and had outstanding fines and compensation orders suspended until 22 May following his release.
