Peter Shimmin will be hoping to secure a seat in Douglas Central
A Douglas man has declared his intention to stand in the 2026 general election.
Peter Shimmin will be hoping to secure a seat in Douglas Central when the Island heads to the polls later this year.
The son of former government minister John Shimmin, he's named his key priorities as tackling the cost of living, supporting young people and families, and rebuilding public trust.
In a statement, he says: "I care deeply about where the Isle of Man is heading. I believe the decisions we make now will define what life looks like for my generation and the ones that follow.
"I care about whether young people and families can see a secure future here. I care about whether people can trust our politicians and public servants. And I care about making life more affordable, so people feel less pressure in their day-to-day lives.
"Politics and public service have been part of my life for a long time. Both of my parents were teachers and then my dad, John, went on to serve as an MHK for 20 years. I have also worked inside government and spent years involved in our community, especially in the arts and creative life.
"Those experiences have shaped me, grounded me, and given me a strong sense of what matters to people.
"I want to listen, speak up, and work hard for Douglas Central, with energy, compassion, and a genuine commitment to the place we all call home.
"I have prepared carefully for this moment, including managing my finances so I can leave full-time work and dedicate the next six months solely to my campaign.
"Over the coming months, I’ll be out and about meeting people across the constituency and wider community, and sharing more about my priorities, values, and ideas."
The House of Keys General Election will take place on 24 September.
