Drink-driver banned from Island's roads

East Baldwin man spotted staggering into car

Magistrates have banned a drink-driver from the roads after police spotted him staggering into his car on Douglas Prom.

Richard Teakle of East Baldwin admitted the offence when he appeared at Douglas Courthouse.

Prosecutor Roger Kane said officers spotted the 45-year-old getting into his car at the Best Western Hotel and Casino on Queens Promenade at around 10pm on 31 January.

Teakle was unsteady on his feet and officers pulled him over outside the Terminus Tavern, where he failed a roadside breath test.

Teakle’s advocate told the court his client considered drink-driving that night to be the worst mistake of his life.

He added the conviction would mean Teakle, who moved to the Island less than a year ago, would lose his job working with cars.

Magistrates banned him from driving for 12 months and he’ll have to sit an extended driving test to get his licence back.

He was also fined £750 and ordered to pay £125 costs.
