Drink-driving pensioner says he'll never drive again

Douglas man almost hit oncoming cars while over the limit

A Douglas pensioner says he’ll never drive again after being banned for drink-driving on New Year’s Eve.

Paul William Robinson of Stanley Terrace appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He admitted one charge of driving over the limit on 31 December.

Prosecution advocate James Robinson told the hearing an off-duty police officer saw Robinson veering from side to side on the New Castletown Road at around 4.30pm.

The court heard the 72-year-old narrowly avoided hitting oncoming cars, and a police patrol stopped him as he reached Stanley Terrace in Douglas.

He told officers he’d drunk just one pint, but a breath test later proved he was more than twice the drink-drive limit.

Magistrates imposed a three-year driving ban as well as fining him £1,000 and ordering him to pay £125 towards prosecution costs.

After he was convicted, Robinson told the bench he never wanted his driving licence back again after the incident.
