Drivers don't want to strike, says union

With a 12 day strike set to start this Saturday, leisure chiefs are stepping up their bid to recruit stand-in bus drivers.

The Department of Community Culture and Leisure's organised a drop-in registration event for stand-in drivers at the Villa Marina tomorrow (Tuesday) between 2pm and 8pm.

It's invited all drivers with a Public Passenger Vehicle or PPV licence who are willing to work during a strike, to come forward as its draws-up a contingency timetable.

Anyone interested must bring their valid PPV licence to the registration process, confirming they are available to work from at any time from this Saturday until June 5.

Meanwhile, the head of Unite in the Island says bus drivers will lose up to £50 per day during the strike.

Eric Holmes says while they’re willing to negotiate, they don’t feel the department is willing to compromise.
