"This announcement has come out of the blue"
A number of taxi drivers have been left in the dark after the seeming closure of Telecabs, or Opul Taxis.
The company allegedly contacted staff via WhatsApp late last night to announce the shutdown of its booking and dispatch system..
It appears it may have ceased trading entirely rather than temporarily, but staff have not received any clarification.
Dave Mackey, who drives for the company, says the news could not have come at a worse time as the Island approaches the end of TT.
He spoke to Manx Radio this morning:
The Chair of the Road Transport Licensing Committee (RTLC), Graham Curphey, told Manx Radio: "We are as surprised as everyone else to read the news this morning. We know as much as what has been reported."
Mr Mackey has also shared the message sent to drivers at around 11pm yesterday (5 June).
It says: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the taxi booking and dispatch system will be switched off from **midnight tonight** and will remain unavailable until further notice.
"As a result, no bookings will be dispatched through the system and customers will be unable to contact the office in the usual way. For Pre bookings auto dispatch will be turned on so if anyone is logged on these may come through.
"At present, neither myself nor the base operators have been provided with any further information regarding this situation. As I have no additional information available, I will be unable to answer calls, messages, or questions regarding the matter.
"I appreciate that this news may be concerning and apologise for the inconvenience and uncertainty this will cause. An update will be provided to all drivers as soon as further information becomes available.
"Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation."
Manx Radio has approached Telecabs and Opul for comment; along with Manx Care regarding impacts on Patient Transfer services.
An auto-reply email from Telecabs states: "Due to circumstances out of our control we are currently unable to operate until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience."
UPDATE:
Manx Radio understands the company has not ceased trading. Instead, it's understood it faced a 'significant technical issue' overnight.
We await official comment.
