Drug gang member admits part in smuggling operation

Liverpool man committed to Court of General Gaol

A Douglas man who’s admitted his part in a plan to smuggle £144,000 of drugs to the Island has been committed to the court of General Gaol Delivery.

Darren Noel Dooley appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse this week.

The 28-year-old, who’s serving a jail term at Jurby prison, admitted being unlawfully concerned in the supply of cannabis between August and October 2017 and conspiracy to produce the drug last April.

Prosecution advocate James Robinson told the hearing Dooley was part of a criminal gang which had plotted to bring drugs to the Island last year.

A Liverpool man was detained by police as he drove a car off the ferry on 19 April – a search of his vehicle revealed a secret compartment containing 7.6 kilos of cannabis.

Magistrates heard Dooley had been in contact with drug dealers in Liverpool who’d arranged for the man to drive the car.

Another 16 charges of possessing drugs with intent to supply, producing drugs and offering to supply them were withdrawn by the prosecution following his guilty plea.

Dooley will appear at the Court of General Gaol Delivery on 5 March.
