Drunk man found lying in street

Fine for 59-year-old arrested for own safety

A drunken man refused to cooperate with police after they found him lying in a street in Douglas, a court’s heard.

Fifty-nine-year-old Jonathan Kelly of Close Kennish in Douglas appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Christopher Arrowsmith at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of being found drunk in public on 4 January.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing a member of the public became concerned about Kelly after they found him on Market Street in the capital at around 9.15pm.

Police officers arrived and tried to engage with Kelly, who appeared uninjured but extremely drunk.

The court heard officers tried to find out his name and address as they attempted to make sure he could get home safely, however he refused to answer their questions.

Kelly, who represented himself in court, was eventually arrested for his own safety.

He was fined £125, and ordered to pay £50 towards prosecution costs.
