Manx election reform proposals approved

Root and branch review of electoral legislation

Recommendations from a report on how to improve elections in the Isle of Man will now go to the Cabinet Office for consideration, which is carrying out a root-and-branch review of electoral legislation.

It's after Tynwald approved the vast majority of them at this week' sitting (20 June).

These included introducing online voter registration, allowing people to register up until a week before polling day, a review of the number of polling stations, advice on the meaning of 'treating', and more guidance for returning officers.

David Cretney MLC chaired the select committee which put the report together

In his opening remarks before the debate, he referred to the Cabinet Office's review:

Tynwald will resume at 10.30am today, when members will move on to item nine on the order paper, which covers amendments to the Equality Bill 2016.
