Election observers suggest polling improvements

CPA says room to improve openness, transparency and polling process

A team of international observers says the Island’s general election in September was orderly, efficient and innovative.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association was asked to send a mission to assess the polling process.

The team has now published its full report, and says the rights to vote and stand in Manx elections are inclusive.

But the team has made ten recommendations to improve voting.

In its report, the CPA mission says there’s still room for improvement in the Island’s openness, transparency and polling processes.

It recommends an open recruitment programme to hire polling centre staff, as well as better training for them and deputy returning officers.

The report also says the government should do more to encourage under-represented groups to register for voting, improve accessibility at polling stations and encourage more women to take part in elections.

Not forming one of its formal recommendations is the idea of an all-Island polling centre, which the report says would help those who work outside their own constituency and so find it difficult to get to their polling station.
