Enduro rider caught illegally riding through plantation

Professional Jamie McCanney appeared at Douglas Courthouse

A top enduro rider caught illegally riding his bike through a plantation has been told a six-month ACU ban is punishment enough.

Professional rider Jamie McCanney of Murray's Lake Drive in Santon appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of driving a vehicle elsewhere than on a highway on 15 June.

Prosecution advocate Barry Swain said McCanney was one of a group of riders challenged by a forestry warden in King's Forest in Greeba at around 3pm.

The other riders made off, and McCanney was said in court to be the only one who did the right thing and stopped to leave his details.

McCanney, who rides for the Yamaha Official Enduro 1 Team, apologised to the court - saying he'd already been handed a six-month suspension by the ACU.

In a letter of mitigation read to the court McCanney, who represented himself, said he understood the need to be a good role model in the sport.

Magistrates said he'd been punished enough by his suspension and gave him a six-month conditional discharge.
