Thousands sign petition to block Braaid Road plans
A planning application which would see 25 elm trees felled in St Marks centres on 'improving road safety'.
The decision has sparked a backlash on social media but the planning committee say it was made after a collision and several near misses on the Braaid Road.
Its Chairman, Martyn Perkins, insists the majority of the trees which are set to be cut down are in poor health.
However more than 10,000 people have signed a petition to save what has been called an 'elm corridor' with TV presenter Chris Packham also backing the protest.
More than 300 trees in the area will remain and Mr Perkins says others will be planted to offset those to be felled.
