Fine for motorist who wouldn't provide breath sample

30-year-old made 17 failed attempts

A Douglas woman has been fined £1000 after failing to provide a sample for police after being arrested for drink driving.

Katrin Melly, of Lord Street, was stopped by police at 3:45am on 11 August after she was seen driving with excessive speed on South Quay.

The 30-year-old made 14 attempts to give a sample at the roadside and a further three at police headquarters, all of which failed.

At Douglas Courthouse she pleaded guilty to the offence, with her advocate telling the court: "She accepts that she ought to have tried harder."

Fining Melly and banning her from the road for five years; Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told her: "It seems to me you were being deliberately evasive."

She'll also have to take and pass an extended driving test and attend a drink drive rehabilitation course.
