Fine for Port St Mary man who ran from police while in possession of MDMA

Court hears 37-year-old is 'extremely remorseful' for incident

A Port St Mary man has been fined after trying to run away from police while in possession of drugs.

Samuel Joseph Corkill of Athol Street pleaded guilty to possessing MDMA, also known as ecstasy, and obstructing a drugs search.

He was overheard talking about drugs while in the Front Porch in Douglas on 17 March, and when approached by the bar manager Corkill threatened to 'bust his face open'.

After police attended, officers attempted to search the 37-year-old, but he managed to release their grip and made off, before being arrested on Walpole Avenue.

While running, Corkill emptied the contents of his pockets on the ground - when officers examined the items they found a bag containing crushed pink tablets, which were later identified as MDMA with a street value of £10-15.

His advocate told the court he was extremely remorseful for his actions, describing the incident as 'an unfortunate blip'.

Magistrates fined Corkill a total of £1,000 plus prosecution costs of £125, as well as ordering the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs.
