Firm admits safety breach

Man died after being crushed

A sentence date has been set for a company which admits responsibility for an accident which cost a Douglas man his life.

UK specialist firm Tuke and Bell Ltd has pleaded guilty to a lapse in workplace safety standards following the death of Gareth Sowden in May 2013.

The 55-year-old mechanical engineer was working on a sewage treatment project in Kirk Michael.

He suffered fatal injuries after he was trapped under a shipping container.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes today adjourned the case for five weeks.

She told the court the construction site had put workers and the public at significant risk, as there had been few restrictions to stop people entering.

Mrs Hughes added a £30,000 fine was a potential starting point for the company, taking its early guilty plea into consideration.

The case will resume on July 14 at Douglas courthouse.
