First Tynwald sitting of the parliamentary year

Busy order paper for members

Tynwald sits for the first session of the new parliamentary year today, at the start of the government’s final legislative year.

As well as 49 items on the main order paper, there are 22 questions for oral answer and a further 16 queries for written reply.

Members will hear two statements from ministers: first from Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne about a review of the planning system, then from Treasury Minister Eddie Teare about pensions freedom.

And there’ll also be new strategies unveiled covering health and social care for the next five years, and biodiversity over the next decade.

Four Tynwald members will ask for committees to be set up to look into issues including juries, property registration, the government’s first-time buyer scheme, and how historic buildings are listed.

Newly-elected MHKs for Peel – Ray Harmer – and Glenfaba, Geoffrey Boot, are due to ask their first parliamentary questions this morning.

In other questions, Onchan MHK Peter Karran leads the way with seven for oral answer, covering topics such as homelessness among ex-forces personnel, drug overdoses, and the Liverpool landing stage used by the Steam Packet Company.
