Flood defences a must with rising sea levels

New flood defence scheme underway

Rising sea levels have made flood defences in Castletown harbour essential - that's according to Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer.

This week his department began work on a £2.3 million scheme to replace existing stone and fences in the area with raised reinforced concrete.    

It's been designed to protect against a repeat of problems caused by the devastating floods in 2014, when many homes by the harbour were badly damaged.

Mr Harmer says weather events like this will become more frequent as climate change causes seas to rise.  

He told Manx Radio many coastal locations need better flood defences, but Castletown was by far the most vulnerable:
