Mr Robertshaw believes more public votes would improve democracy

A former MHK believes there needs to be a mechanism allowing members of the public to call for a referendum.

Chris Robertshaw is now a member of the Future Isle of Man campaign group, which is calling for improvements to how government functions ahead of next year's House of Keys General Election.

Last year the House of Keys backed calls to update the Island's referendum legislation, which dates back to 1979.

Mr Robertshaw said making it easier to hold a public vote on big issues would improve democracy:
