Supermarket sold misleading 'local' produce
Island retailer Shoprite is at the centre of a controversy, after reports it misled customers with produce mis-sold as 'Manx'.
A string of published emails between the Manx National Farmers Union and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture appears to reveal five separate cases of wrongly labelled meat, discovered earlier this month.
The incident has provoked an angry response on social media.
The offending products included imported minced steak and gammon, sold under the Ballacushag Manx meat brand; and European Picanha rump steak which was touted as Manx premium beef.
In one instance, the mistaken labels were scribbled out with marker pen by a butcher.
A further error was identified in a Manx Pork Leg Joint, which did not have a clearly defined 'use by' date on its packaging.
The Manx NFU has filed a complaint with DEFA, which says it's 'investigating' the matter.
'Human error' has been blamed for the mishap - the Department says Shoprite has given additional training to the staff responsible.
