Govt needs to be 'taking serious action' regarding Steam Packet dispute

Notices of termination issued to staff before Christmas

An MHK says the ongoing Isle of Man Steam Packet Company dispute is a serious issue that needs to be looked at by government.

Over the festive period, we saw several delays and cancellations hit customers of the company due to weather conditions.

But an ongoing industrial dispute is rumbling on in the background, with members of the seafarers union Nautilus taking action - for two weeks from today (3 January) the Manxman is operating one daily sailing on a contingency schedule due to a lack of officer cover.

Three days before Christmas officers were served with notices of termination.

Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse says it has now reached the point that government needs to be 'taking serious action':

Treasury Minister Alex Allinson says: "Over the Christmas period Government have been receiving regular updates from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company on the disruption to sailings caused by the recent storms across the British Isles and the status of the ongoing industrial dispute with members of Nautilus International."

"The Council of Ministers will be receiving a further update on Thursday."
