1km of Barbican wall to be restored
Scaffolding will surround the entrance to Peel Castle for the next five or six months whilst 'high priority' works are undertaken.
Manx National Heritage has commissioned repair and protection work on the Barbican wall to protect and safeguard one of the Island’s most iconic heritage sites.
It's the next phase of the organisation’s plans to restore around one kilometre of the curtain wall of the castle.
Specialist contractors will repair and protect historic masonry using traditional conservation techniques and locally sourced materials.
John- Paul Walker is the Historic Buildings Architect:
The £70,000 project has been funded through a loan to MNH from the Isle of Man Government.
Mr Walker added: “This project represents another important step in safeguarding one of the Isle of Man’s most iconic historic sites against the challenges of time and its exposed coastal setting.
“It has been particularly rewarding to champion local expertise throughout the project by working closely with Manx contractors.
“We also want people to experience conservation in action.
"Visitors will be able to watch the work as it happens, learn more about this phase of the project through our interpretation boards, and join a guided tour.”
