Government launches road tax consultation
Government is mulling over the future of road tax and wants the public to submit their views.
A consultation has been launched by the Department of Infrastructure on how funds needed to maintain the Island's 683 mile network of roads can be raised.
The DOI has released a questionnaire outlining the new funding models being considered - and wants public feedback.
It's considering introducing new payment systems, technology for licensing, and charging structures to encourage motorists to run more environmentally friendly cars.
Road tax is an annual payment for most with vehicles, of which there are 70,916 registered here, which generates £13 million for government coffers.
This revenue, along with some additional funding, is used on maintenance of our transport links.
Officers say with budgets and staff numbers reducing over the past years, it can be difficult to meet public and political expectations on this issue.
