Inflation drops slightly in April

Sharp rise in oil price over the last 12 months

Inflation on the Island dropped slightly last month (April)

It dropped from 2.2% in March to 2.1% in April as measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI).

The retail prices index measured 7.3%, a monthly rise of 1.1%.

However, an Economic Affairs report says there are still a number of upward inflationary pressures impacting on household budgets.

Housing, water, electricity and gas have remained in positive inflation - though heating oil prices have remained stable over the month, mostly due to the impact of Brexit on the exchange rate and wholesale oil prices.

However, oil is still more expensive that it was a year ago, with a 36.4% increase since April 2016.

Other large risers include oils and fats up 21.9%, multivitamin tablets up 15.9% and pork up 13.2%, whilst travellers can rejoice with air travel down 21.8% and sea travel down 11.1 %.

And another item which has fallen is good news if you're prone to falling yourself - sticking plasters are down 5.3%
