IoM prison a 'model' for smoke-free institutions

E-cigs introduction reaping benefits

Prisons throughout the UK are looking at the Isle of Man model in a bid to become tobacco free.

It’s believed 50 per cent of prisons will have banned smoking by next year, with Scotland's ones all smoke-free by the end of 2018.

The introduction of e-cigarettes at Jurby - specialist devices which are tamper-proof - is being described by bosses as a trailblazing move for others to follow.

Prison Governor Bob McColm told Radio 4's The World at One programme the new system has also led to changes in the behaviour of inmates.
