Island resident pushes for fairer support after partner’s amputation

Legislation leaves him without disability benefits because of his age

The partner of an Isle of Man amputee is hoping to raise £15,000 to buy a wheelchair-accessible vehicle and help him regain his independence.

John Morris had his right leg amputated above the knee in March, but because of his age, he doesn’t qualify for a mobility scooter or disability benefits.

His partner, Dawn Killas, says that’s due to current legislation, which prevents people over 65 from accessing disability support, meaning John only receives attendance allowance.

After three years of being largely confined to a wheelchair at home, Dawn says she just wants him to reconnect with others and enjoy life again:

"I'd love for him to just to be able to see friends, go around the Island. Just to see the dogs playing on the beach. As well as (attending) all his hospital appointments - they always have to fetch him in an ambulance which is very difficult." - Dawn Killas

Chanelle Sukhoo has been talking to Ms Killas:

Manx Care says it doesn't have anything to do with legislation.

The Department of Health and Social Care has also been contacted for comment.
