Island steps into new era of classic racing

Organisers of the Festival of Motorcycling will be hoping for good weather this afternoon as racing gets underway in the inaugural event.

The Mountain Circuit will reverberate to the sounds of bikes from a different era when the Classic TT sets off from the Grandstand at lunchtime on Race Day 1.

The

four-lap 500cc Classic race with a full starting grid of 90 riders on 1960s racing machines, is due to start at 12.45pm.

It will be followed by an MGP Practice.

At 3.15pm the Newcomer A, Senior, Junior, and SuperTwin classes will go out, followed by the Newcomer B and C and Lightweights.

There’s then a 1967 Senior TT Re-enactment of the epic duel between with Giacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood featuring Ago and John McGuinness, followed by the VMCC Closed Road Parade at 4.30pm.

Roads are due to reopen at 6pm, although bad weather could see that extended to 9pm at the latest.

John Moss looks ahead to the action:
