Island's young people told 'look after your bodies' as UK cancer rates rise

Rates in the UK have increased by 24 percent in 25 to 49-year-olds

Young people on the Island are being advised to look at their lifestyle habits. 

It comes after reports in the UK that more people under the age of 50 are being diagnosed with cancer. 

Cancer Research UK state that between the early 1990s and 2019, overall cancer rates in 25 to 49-year-olds in the UK increased by 24 percent.

Malcolm Clague is from the Isle of Man Anti Cancer Association. 

No definitive reason has been given for the increases but Malcolm explains why people under the age of 50 here should be concerned:

According to the World Cancer Research Fund bowel cancer has seen the largest rise in the UK with 3.9 cases per 100,000 adults under 50 in 2001 to 8.4 per 100,000 in 2023.

Ruth Cowin lost her son Daniel to the disease in 2024 at the age of 40.
