Laxey woman jailed after three assaults in one day

21-year-old sent to prison for nine months

A Laxey woman has been jailed for nine months after punching another woman in the face.

Rosemary Ellen Burgess, of Old Laxey Hill, also assaulted two police officers on the same day.

The 21-year-old was arrested on 15 September after reports of an incident at a property in Douglas – officers found her in Hutchinson Square just after 8.35pm.

Burgess refused to remove her bag or relax her arms so they could apply handcuffs – she then began lashing out, kicking one PC in the shin.

At Police Headquarters Burgess managed to remove one of her hands from the handcuffs she’d been placed in – whilst officers were reapplying them she kicked a second constable in the leg.

Burgess later admitted the offences – during sentencing at Douglas Courthouse her advocate confirmed she’d been under the influence of drugs at the time.

“She really does have an unenviable record for someone of her age,” he told the court adding: “She is someone who places her own life at risk by the drug taking habits that she has.”

Describing the assaults as ‘entirely unprovoked’ High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said she could find no grounds to suspend the sentence.

Jailing Burgess she told her: “I do hope you have a very long look at yourself whilst in custody.”
